Despite reporting a record-breaking fiscal third-quarter result that beat Wall Street estimates on both top-line revenue and bottom-line earnings per share, Apple shares declined in after-hours trading. The drop highlighted a market environment where investors focused heavily on future guidance, supply bottlenecks, and growth across specific segments rather than past performance.

    1. Key Drivers Behind the Share Price Drop

    • Soft Forward Guidance: Apple forecasted 9% to 11% revenue growth for the upcoming current quarter, which fell short of Wall Street expectations of around 12%.

    • Supply Chain & Chip Constraints: Management raised concerns over supply constraints for advanced chips, threatening product availability and slowing the pace of future growth.

    • Services Segment Miss: Although services revenue grew 12.1%, the performance missed analysts’ projections, raising questions about margin stability from high-margin recurring income.

    • Slower Growth in Greater China: While revenue in Greater China climbed over 22%, it lagged Wall Street consensus expectations.

    • Weakness in iPads: A decline in iPad revenue demonstrated uneven performance across Apple’s product portfolio.

    2. Q3 Financial & Operational Highlights

Despite the market’s cautious reaction, Apple’s core hardware lineup—led by the iPhone and Mac—delivered strong quarterly numbers:

    • Overall Revenue: Increased 16.4% YoY to $109.4 billion (beating estimates).

    • Earnings Per Share (EPS): Came in at $2.02, making it Apple’s strongest June quarter on record.

    • iPhone Revenue: Surged 21.7% to $54.25 billion, driven by sustained demand for premium models.

    • Mac Sales: Climbed 28.7%, benefiting from strong enterprise and consumer demand for updated models.

    3. What Investors Are Watching Next

    • Supply Bottleneck Resolution: How effectively Apple manages chip shortages to fulfill demand for high-end hardware.

    • Artificial Intelligence Strategy: Execution on generative AI capabilities, including upcoming Siri enhancements and OS integrations.

    • Margin & Growth Sustainability: Protecting gross margins while maintaining double-digit revenue growth amid heightened global tech competition.
